It’s been a while since I’ve written. Not because I haven’t wanted to but because I haven’t brought myself to it. But today, today I ache to do certain things. It’s been a long night of writing essays and so I can’t help but want to spoil myself. Spoiling myself doesn’t entail too much. It simply entails taking a nice long shower, wearing my pyjamas , picking up the Mandela autobiography I put down over 4 months ago and being able to write. I haven’t written in a while and today, I’ll feed that whim of mine.
The last year has been eventful, to say the least. I’ve thrown myself back into school and it’s a pretty demanding course and when things get demanding and hectic and “busy” we forget to feed the soul. Often , I’ve attempted to push myself and go break-less yet there come certain thresholds where my mind and body force a break upon me. Our minds are fed by the work we are caught up in , our bodies are fed because we wouldn’t be able to function otherwise but often our souls get neglected.
We forget how much joy is to be found in glancing at a new budding flower. We forget what it’s like to read about our heroes. We forget the euphoria of getting lost in a city, or playing pick-up soccer at a park, or watching an elderly couple speak to each other. Sometimes, I dare say, we forget how to dream. We think all of this will backtrack our game. If we slow down , everyone else will run ahead. Yet, the analogy of the slow computer is a helpful one. The computer that’s been switched on for way too long and sounds like it’s about to take off and is as slow as could be and often all it needs is to be switched off for a while. Like that, we need to take that time in our day/week/ month to take a break and feed that which motivates us, propels us. It leaves us refreshed and in a better place to start our work again. That time-out nourishes our roots so that our branches can reach further than they could the day before. It’s critical.
Today. Take that time for yourself. Get in touch with that energy. Do that which you love, whatever it may be to you. It may be a TED talk, a run around the park, making yourself an amazing meal, or even just walking around and watching people. Do what it is that you love, feed your soul and feel the euphorias, the ultimate everyday joys that life has to offer because at the end of the day those are the most beautiful moments.
