You know how when you get interested in something, you see more of it? If you like a certain make of a car; you suddenly see it everywhere. I guess my eyes have been open to an opportunity to make a difference – I have been on the look out for organizations and people who are changing the world and it seems like I see it more and more. Suddenly I see ads on sites or I come across blogs or videos.
I just came across the One Young World Conference that just happened in Zurich from the 1st to the 4th of September. Something I had never heard of before. People like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and activist and journalist Fatima Bhutto were there. There are high profile people who are influencing and inspiring people all around the world and I had not even heard of this conference. It is basically a gathering of young leaders who have the same goals (such as increasing journalism or spreading activism). It really seems a breeding ground for amazing ideas.
Delegates to this conference put up their profiles to look for sponsorship and reading some of these profiles truly inspired me. I really felt disapointed that I have not really done much to make this world a better place. You can check out some of these profiles at http://www.oneyoungworld.com/Community/ and I really encourage you to do so. There are people who have been at this work since they were very young and it is rightly so that they can rub shoulders with people who have changed history.
The more we read about people who are doing things and changing the now, the more motivated we feel to actually contribute to our causes. It is human nature to feel like some cause is close to your heart. Some of us feel for more than others and it is not wrong if you do not feel for as many people as you would like. But, if we could all even just implement change in one persons life (part of a cause that you feel passionate about ) – then that is enough.
A word on change though – what I have learned in my last 3 weeks is that try and leave a change that will function without you. Invest in something that will last past you. For example , it is nice to volunteer and get close to a child but at one point you might have to leave and so you might give that child hope but not that much to follow through on. Whereas if you invest in something like a textbook or a computer then that child will have access to that information with or without you. Invest in something that will last past yourself.
